'Catching Fire,' 'Frozen' heat up Thanksgiving film box office in U.S.

NEW YORK: Action film "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" led the North American box office with ticket sales of $35.6 million over the first two days of the long U.S. Thanksgiving weekend that began on Wednesday, while Disney's animated "Frozen," sold a hefty $26.3 million. "Catching Fire," the second instalment of the "Hunger Games" franchise, grossed $14.9 million on Thursday's Thanksgiving Day holiday according to studio Lions Gate. That broke the record previously held by "Toy Story 2," which earned $13.1 million on Thanksgiving in 1999, according to Rentrak. 

Indian magazine editor arrested on woman assault charges

NEW DELHI: Police arrested the editor-in-chief of an Indian magazine on Saturday over allegations that he had sexually assaulted a woman colleague, in a case that has turned the focus back on sexual violence after the fatal gang rape of a woman last year. The journalist told a superior that Tarun Tejpal, 50-year-old founder of the award-winning weekly Tehelka, had assaulted her twice in a hotel elevator during a conference in the resort state of Goa this month.

Siddle sympathises with Trott but focus on winning


BRISBANE: Australia seamer Peter Siddle sympathises with England batsman Jonathan Trott, who left the Ashes tour to deal with a stress-related illness, but said his team's focus was squarely on winning and that they would not be dialling down the intensity. Mozambique Airlines plane crashes in Namibia, killing 33

WINDHOEK: A Mozambique Airlines plane en route to Angola crashed in a game park in northeast Namibia, killing all 33 people on board, Namibian police said on Saturday. Flight TM 470 left Maputo on Friday for the Angolan capital Luanda with 27 passengers and six crew when it lost contact with air traffic controllers, the national carrier said in a statement. Namibian Police Force Deputy Commissioner Willy Bampton said rescue workers had found the burned-out wreckage of the aircraft in the dense bush of Bwabwata National Park, near                                                                                         the borders with Angola and Botswana.

U.S. airlines advised to give China flight plans over new defence zone

WASHINGTON: The United States advised its commercial airlines to notify Chinese authorities of flight plans when travelling through an air defence zone that Beijing established a week ago over the East China Sea, ratcheting up regional tensions.
 The United States said it expected U.S. carriers to operate in line with so-called notices to airmen issued by foreign countries, adding, however, that the decision did "not indicate U.S. government acceptance of China's requirements.

Pakistan promises to help Afghans meet former Taliban chief

KABUL: Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif promised Afghanistan on Saturday that he would help arrange further meetings between Afghan officials and a former Taliban commander as part of renewed efforts to revive a defunct peace process. Pakistan announced it would release the insurgent group's former second-in-command, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, in September. Afghan officials believe he still retains enough influence within the Taliban to help rekindle peace talks.

PM Sharif meets Obama to discus vital issues today

Sikandar Sanam:

Sikandar Sanam (21 September 1960 – 5 November 2012) was a Pakistani stage artist, singer, actor and stand up comedian. In Pakistan, he was known as the artist who redefined the art of on-stage mimicry. Sikandar's father, the late Syed Abdul Sattar Shoqeen Jetpuri (a Gujarati poet), was a well known poet from Jetpur, India. Sanam credited his father as, versatile, talented and proficient who patronized him with his talent.

Career:

Sanam started performing on-stage as a child artist and singer. He preferred acting over singing and decided to enter show business. He changed his name from Mohammad Sikandar to Sikandar Sanam (Sanam meaning beloved in Urdu).

He was one of the rare comedians to have come out from the Karachi theatre scene. Despite his colloquial jokes and street smart improvisational skills like many other theatre comedians, what distinguished him from others was his Pakistani remakes of Indian films amongst which Khal Nayak 2, Shayla 2, Munna Bhai MBBS 2 and Tere Naam Part 2 were the most famous. The craze for these remakes increased so much over time that the cable operators played them on public demand, and later on, a number of mainstream entertainment channels also aired them.

Sanam gained much popularity by acting in Tere Naam 2 which was a parody of record breaking Indian movie Tere Naam.The Great Indian Laughter Challenge earned him the coveted title Comedy King. From stage, he gained fame in the art of mimicry. He directed, produced and acted in several parodies of Bollywood movies.

Death:

In September 2012, Sanam was diagnosed with liver cancer. The actor was admitted to Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, although was later discharged. He was taken to Mirpurkhas to visit a faith healer on 4 November 2012 and brought back to the city next morning. At around 3pm, his condition deteriorated and he was rushed to the Civil Hospital, where he was officially pronounced dead. The comedian lost his battle to cancer on 5th Nov 2012. He is left behind his wife, four sons and two daughters.

ISPR puts quake death toll at 476

 ISLAMABAD: Pakistan army says that the recent earthquakes in Balochistan have killed 476 people and left another 428 wounded. Director General, ISPR, Maj-Gen Asim Bajwa said that the two earthquakes affected 182 kilometers of area in Balochistan. “Two field hospitals have been set up in the quake-hit areas. 2000 army jawans are taking part in relief activities.

Electricity tariffs go up by Rs5.89/unit


ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Monday dropped an electricity bomb on domestic consumers, raising power tariff by Rs5.89/ unit from the next month. A notification has also been issued in this regard. According to the notification, new tariff will be applicable on Karachi Electricity Supply Company (KESC) and other power firms.

Nisar says 5000 families affected by Balochistan quakes

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has said that 5, 000 families have been affected by the recent earthquakes in Balochistan. Interacting with media persons here on Monday, Chaudhry Nisar said the powerful quakes also damaged 125, 000 houses.

Britney Spears in Las Vegas for Greatest Hits





NEW YORK: Britney Spears, the pop star and former "X-Factor" judge, is heading to Las Vegas with a two-year residency deal to perform at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino.

The former child star, whose hits include "Baby One More Time" and "Toxic," will perform 50 shows a year starting on December 27. Tickets for the shows go on sale on Tuesday.

Spears said in an interview from Las Vegas,"I love it here, the energy here is really, really good."

She further added, "I am definitely going to do the greatest hits but I am going to have to put my new material in it to keep it fresh."

The announcement ended speculation that Spears, 31, would follow in the footsteps of other top-selling artists such as Canada's Celine Dion and Britain's Elton John, who had long-term contracts in the gambling mecca.
